Bright lights. Big City. Great archives.

New York, New York. What it was is in the archives. And there are lots of archives. Your pals at the Gotham Center for NYC History compiled the list for you.

There are 8,000,000 stories in the Naked City. We have to store them somewhere.

In the million-footed city, its ever-energetic citizens leave behind a trail of their frenetic activity. All this booming energy produced an extraordinary amount of documentation from papers and letters and business records to sheet music, dance scores, artworks and billions of other artifacts created as part of a life lived in New York.

The Gotham Center for New York City History – part of the CUNY Graduate Center – has done the routine legwork of gathering together in one spot a handy reference tool for quickly finding the collection of archival materials to flesh out your next NYC research project. This is a map to keep you from getting lost when you travel back in time and let you know where our vast urban family holds on to the things they find precious.
